Writers’ Program – Now More Than Ever
Vincent Silk is a writer whose fiction, poetry and essays have been published in Going Down Swinging, Wormhole, and un Magazine, among other places. His first novel Sisters of No Mercy is due out August 2018 through Brio Books.
I have been thinking about memory and memorial, the histories we share and those we don’t. I read so many books about the different histories of Sydney. I wanted to break apart the pieces of history and culture that allow me to be here in this moment, and look at them and say something about my observations. I wanted to explore the queer desire to stuff meaning into the void. How gendered it is. I wanted to think about the process by which something takes on political weight, and the ways that heavily political and politicised things become less so, either very rapidly or over time. I wanted to examine my own historicising of the city I where I ‘grew up’. I wanted to be irreverent. I wanted to make myself uncomfortable.
