Firstdraft’s Exhibition Program is at the core of the organisation, presenting innovative new work by emerging artists, encouraging professionalisation and supporting experimental practice. Open to individuals and groups from across Australia and internationally, the exhibition program is selected via twice-yearly callouts and programmed by the Directorate. This short-lead approach supports artists in the early years of their practice, allowing them to explore and present ideas quickly. It also enables the organisation to respond to changes in the artistic landscape.
In addition to a fully subsidised gallery space for four weeks, all exhibiting artists receive an artist fee of $1000, promotion and professional documentation of their work, access to equipment and participate in monthly artist talks. Eligible participants can also apply for the NSW Regional Artist Fund (supported by Create NSW), and the National Artist Fund (supported by The Australia Council for the Arts). These initiatives support artists with travel, accommodation and freight costs, facilitating exhibition opportunities for regional or remote artists who otherwise would not be able to exhibit at Firstdraft.
