First Nations Curators' Program

Applications to Firstdraft’s First Nations Curators’ Program are open year round and assessed periodically. The program supports an emerging Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander practitioner to present an exhibition at Firstdraft. The recipient will be offered a $1,500 curatorial fee, $1,000 for artist fees, support with exhibition development and a professional mentorship with an established First Nations curator.

The Program is designed to provide early career curatorial practitioners with new skills, professional development and access to key industry networks. The Firstdraft board will work with the recipient to select a mentor of their choice.

Successful applicants receive

> A fully subsidised four-week exhibition at Firstdraft across two gallery spaces (Gallery 1 & 2 unless otherwise requested).

> In addition to the $1000 for artist fees, curators will receive a curatorial fee of $1500 for production costs and a publication that supports the exhibition.

> The opportunity to develop a public program which further explores the themes presented in the exhibition.

> Professional mentorship with an established First Nations curator

> Digital promotion through the Firstdraft website, electronic newsletters and social media platforms.

> Access to and assistance with Firstdraft’s equipment and resources.

> Opening night event and gallery minding

Submissions must include

> Proposal (max. 1 A4 page, approx. 500 words) detailing your exhibition title and concept.

> CV (max. 1 A4 page) detailing relevant experience.

> Up to 10 labelled, screen resolution (72dpi) images per application, formatted into a single PDF (max.10MB) AND/ OR 1 video/multimedia works per artist, uploaded to a third party sharing site such as YouTube or Vimeo, with an applicable link provided at the end of your proposal document.

> Image labels are to be expressed: Artwork Title, date produced, materials, dimensions/ duration (if applicable)

Further program details

> Collaborative applications from multiple curators/curatorial collectives are welcome, however this program cannot accommodate additional financial allowances.

> The selected curator/s will be solely responsible for organising the exhibition. Namely, the selection of artists/artworks and exhibition logistics.
