Carolyn Craig’s practice operates through conceptual ideas of how power is embedded within material exchanges (between bodies, objects and at a quantum level) and ways to develop counter representational practices. They hold a PHD from the Queensland College of Art (2018) where they also completed undergraduate studies (2012) and currently teach at the National Art School (Sydney, Gadigal).
They see material practices as a relational act connected to political spaces and the broader arts ecology and founded artist run space SCHMICK Contemporary in Haymarket with this ethos in mind. They have also recently founded a large warehouse space with partner Damian Dillon called SYRUP Contemporary in Marrickville. This space investigates a new hybrid project/commercial model.
They are a member of research groups ICN (Intermedial Composi/on Network) University of New South Wales, the Magenta Group (Bristol/Australia/Poland) and APARN (Asia Pacific Artistic Research Network). Recent Exhibitions include International Women in Photography (Seoul, S Korea), Following the Southern Cross (Hongik University Seoul, S Korea), Support Structures (Tiles Lewisham) Disruption (King Mongkut University, Bangkok) Undercurrent (PARI, Parramatta) In Land Sea (Grafton Regional Gallery), Spectral Lens (Photoaccess, ACT) and Situated Text (Sawtooth, Tasmania).
They have published work with Runway Journal, Imprint Magazine and the Feminist Women’s Legal Journal and their work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, National Library, Northsite Arts, Burnie Regional, Hong Kong Graphics Art Centre and others.
