Joseph’s artistic practice connects the latent political and technological dimensions of textiles through carpet-based installation. Drawing from lived experiences with police brutality in the U.S., Joseph’s work utilises the tufting gun as a symbolic tool to reframe the societal and political implications of police violence. By re-representing thumbnail JPEGs in carpet, there is a curious potential to ‘soften’ and memorialise deeply potent and disconcerting imagery. This act simultaneously underscores the enduring tensions surrounding police violence, not only in the U.S. but across the globe.
