Amina McConvell

Based in Darwin in the NT, Amina McConvell constructs large-scale sculptural installations; combining mural painting with drawing and sculpture. Amina's creative practice is multifaceted and experimental, incorporating independent research, curatorial projects and project development.

Amina graduated from the National Art School (Painting), Sydney, 2007, and in 2011 completed a honours at Charles Darwin University (Darwin, 2012). Amina’s graduate work; Uncertainty Factors was curated into Hatched: The National Graduates Exhibition at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA), where she received a honourable mention.

In 2012/13 Amina received a Darmasiswa Scholarship from the Indonesian Institute of Art, Yogyakarta (Jogja), supported by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust. In Jogja Amina co-curated a research project with Lashita Situmorang; The Poetic Everyman Project: Exploring Mythology in the Contemporary Context , a research collective comprised of 8 artists from Indonesia, Australia, England and America. This project was presented at Sangkring Art Space (Jogja, 2013) & the Darwin Visual Art Association (Feb, 2014).

In 2014 undertook a Gertrude Contemporary, Studio 18 residency and also received an Arts NT Emerging Artists Award and an Australia Council, Artstart grant - enabling her to complete an internship at Warmun Art Centre (Kimberley, WA) and a residency at the Krack! Studio, Jogja. 2014 Amina initiated The Free Space Studio with the support of arts NT, and Darwin Community Arts an accessible art program focused on professional outcomes artists with disabilities.

In 2015 Amina is touring her new body of work Hypnogogic at Krack! Studio, Verge Gallery/University of Sydney, First Draft (Sydney) and Watch This Space (Alice Springs) .
