AnSo is a South-Korean born, Sydney-based vocalist and producer. More recently exploring elements of experimental pop, her work from her debut EP Farrago of Emotions, captures her journey of cultural confusion through a sense of disjointedness and angularity as well as lyrics which weave back and forth from English and Korean. This is especially clear in her tracks ‘Jang Hwa Soon’, ‘Babo’, and ‘Diaspora’ from the EP. Having a focus on production, her works feel digital and electronic, however, she also offers a sense of vulnerability and rawness through personal lyrics as well as the use of personal field recordings. Field recordings have become a prevalent part of music making for AnSo where works such as ‘Farrago’, ‘Jang Hwa Soon’, ‘Babo’ and ‘Naneun Nowhere’ feature sound recordings sent by her family members from South Korea, capturing real moments as well as everyday sounds including the sound of the walking through a park in Seoul and the sound of her aunties and mother accidentally taking a selfie video instead of a photo. Tracks like ‘Perception’ also includes random sounds such as frogs, walking on snow and distant birds to represent a disconnection from the mind and the body. The track explores notions of self consciousness relating to the perception of one’s body. Including these sounds into her music whether untouched or manipulated, there is a notion of longing, providing a sense of intimacy. All this leads to the creation of AnSo's bizarre and exciting sound world.
