Edward Barns
Edward Barns’ unique style is characterised by bright colours, bold outlines, and thick brushstrokes. His approach to art is intuitive, confident, and playful, reflecting both his home environment and the many beings he shares it with. Ed’s creativity extends across drawing, painting, ceramics, and screen-printing, forming a multidisciplinary practice that continues to evolve.
When Ed was younger, he was non-verbal and began making art as a way to communicate with his mother about what was happening in his world. He started painting more seriously with Life Without Barriers over 20 years ago and, for the past decade, has developed his practice at the Nambucca Valley Phoenix School of Arts in Bowraville.
Over the years, Ed has exhibited widely and built a strong and dedicated following. His enjoyment of painting continues to deepen alongside the growth of his artistic practice.
In 2024, Ed was awarded the inaugural Phoenix Art Prize and was selected for the Accessible Arts Bundanon Artist Residency. His work has also been recognised through regional awards, including first prize for painting and third prize for ceramics at the Macksville Show in both 2024 and 2025, as well as a Highly Commended award at the Tamworth Regional Art Show in 2012.
