Tom Yousif
Born 1994 in South West Sydney where he currently lives and works Yousif completed his Master of Fine Art degree in 2018 majoring in painting at the National Art School, Sydney. Yousif's artistic practice merges technological processes with traditional painting, employing computer software and commercial vinyl cutting equipment. His work aims to breathe new life into artworks from the past century and beyond, questioning the notions of authenticity and relevance in our image-saturated world. By repurposing imagery, Yousif subjects it to the process of silhouetting or tonal variations, initially visualizing it on a digital display. This immobilizes the original expressive gestures that were present in the referenced artwork, giving rise to a static rendition. This motionless interpretation opens up new avenues for reinterpretation, propelling the original work into uncharted territories.
Through his innovative approach, Yousif seeks to push the boundaries of art, inviting viewers to reconsider their perceptions and engage in fresh dialogues surrounding art's evolving nature. With his combination of traditional techniques and contemporary technology, he continues to question conventions and explore unexplored realms through the painted surface.
