Isma’ {listen} is a body of work presenting the intersecting practices of artists Nicole Barakat, Zeina Iaali and Shireen Taweel. Within the artists’ individual mediums the use of the repetitive actions of making as a meditative process is employed in order to extend the concept of deeper listening, the focus of the listening is to converge the geographical locations and cultural practices of past and present between the ancestral homelands in the north of Lebanon and the current cultural home in Sydney.
Valuing deeper listening, intuition and knowledge, the exhibition engages in experimental and non-linear ways of making, informed by the progressive interpretation of past practices. By listening to past happenings in the geographical locations of ancestors and the relationship to the resources used to establish thriving communities in these locations, traditional materials are formed into contemporary objects reflective of who we are, re-gathering ancestral ways of knowing, and through the application of this knowledge, designing successful future communal spaces of inclusion and open dialogue.
