LOVE, LABOUR AND CONTEMPORARY ART
What’s love got to do with it? is the second in a three part multi-state lecture series organised by All Conference.
A dominant attitude towards work is that enjoying what one does for a living should be payment enough. Indeed, this is often the justification for the relative low wage of arts workers. This leg of the All Conference lecture series brings together three arts workers who operate in very different ways within the not-for-profit sector in Australia and New Zealand. Through a series of short papers, speakers will bring their own perspective to the relationship between love and labour in the arts. Papers will be followed by a short Q and A chaired by Firstdraft Director Katie Winten.

Bios:
Clare Cooper is a local performer and organiser who has worked with artist collectives in Sydney and immersed in the Echtzeitmusik scene in Berlin over the last 18 years. Cooper co-founded the NOW now performance series and annual festival (Sydney, 2001-present), experimental sound collectives the Splinter Orchestra (Sydney 2002-present) and Splitter Orchester (Berlin 2009-present) and most recently Frontyard a community futuring and research space in Marrickville (2016-present). Common threads through each organisation has been an exploration of collective authorship, improvisation and public experimentation. She is currently a member of the team running Frontyard Projects, and is sharpening her design futuring practice alongside parenting and finishing a PhD.
Hana Pera Aoake (Tainui, Ngāti Raukawa) is an artist and writer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa. They are a recipient of the 2017/18 Firstdraft writers program, Endless Love, with Callum Devlin. They work primarily in the Fresh and Fruity Māori art collective with Mya Morrison-Middleton and is currently drowning in debt completing an MFA at Massey University.
Talia Smith is an artist and curator from Aotearoa but now based in Warrang, Sydney. Her visual arts practice explores notions of time, memory and ruin through the land and has been exhibited in both solo and group shows in Australia, New Zealand, New York and Germany. Her curatorial practice has a particular focus on photography and time based practices and aims to challenge the notions of how photograph is made, curated and exhibited. Smith has curated shows in public institutions and artist run spaces in New Zealand and Australia. She is one of the recipients of the Artbank Emerging Curator award for 2018, was Firstdraft's emerging curator for 2017 and took part in 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art's curatorial Intensive. Smith is the founder and co-director of artist run space Cold Cuts in Petersham and is the current Chair of the Runway Experimental Art board.
