This exhibition forms part of an evolving project called“The Man With The Movie Camera”, and is inadvertently inspired by Dziga Vertovsʼ silent film of the same title. By questioning the complicity of documentation in provoking and politicising the gestures of performance, this series explores the handling and performative potential of the camera. To date, the works are a combination of books/ledgers and video-installations that aim to defer the “live-performance”.
James Nguyen works with performance and video in addition to a range of other site-specific, and time-based practices. Focusing on the relationships between the body and the object, his work is often playful and self-deprecating. Completing undergraduate studies at NAS, his current research at SCA is focused on visual absences, and performance as cinematography.
