Jimmy Nuttall and Nick Smith have a shared interest in identity, sexuality and memory. Their two-person exhibition brings various material experiments into focus through stoneware, video and installation. Whilst Smith and Nuttall’s works remain exclusive of each other, their shared investment in sentimentality and nostalgia tie the practices of these two artists together.

For Smith and Nuttall beauty is desirable, erotic and above all laced with an unintelligible sadness. For Nuttall this sadness exists in the space between two friends or two lovers, when you’re struck with the inexplicable loneliness of being a platonic half.

For Smith this is encountered in the silence between human, object and nature, and an overarching feeling of disconnection from his environment. In their show ‘I am crying’ Smith and Nuttall attempt to capture that which they deem beautiful, exhibiting an end point that is a reflection of their own fraught desires.
