The exhibition SuperNature takes its cue from literature and film inspired by apocalyptic and catastrophic events in which nature is represented as a malign force – infinitely adaptable and wilfully destructive – challenging the primacy of mankind’s control of the planet. In this Darwinian struggle plants and animals reign supreme, genetically altered hybrids better equipped to cope with an unstable and unforgiving environment. It is a world as unfamiliar and terrifying as that encountered by explorers of the past in which nature was both a cause of wonder and an existential threat.
