Milly Yencken
Caught at a fork in the road. Milly Yencken, is currently based between Melbourne and Iceland. She uses her practice to find connections between the painted canvas and traditional techniques of animation. These two methods are used interchangeably as a tool to unlock other worlds within. Her work has nothing to say directly, but rather invites each viewer to feel what arises within themselves in response to the allegories she presents them with. Like observing unusual flowers that bloom only at night. When working she feels each brushstroke allowing dormant figures to awaken and wander amongst the fractured space of a painting. Her belief is that animation doesn’t have to be a film, or a cartoon, but rather a meditative tool to hold an idea open. She has won some minor awards and completed some studies in far away places, but those details rarely feed the soul to read about. Instead her only intentions are to invite the viewer to join in on the shared space of an otherworldly daydream. Like it, or hate it, feel empty or amused by it. At this fork in the road there may be two paths, but neither of them is the wrong choice to make. It is simply your choice to make.
