Luke Abdallah is an emerging artist living and working in Sydney, Australia. His work challenges and expands the way we engage with visual art. Born completely blind and living with elective mutism, Abdallah has developed a groundbreaking multi-sensory practice rooted in expressive abstraction and performance.
Focusing primarily on gestural painting, often inspired by music and sound, Abdallah paints using a white cane—believed to be the only artist in the world working in this way. His sweeping, textured movements capture rhythmic energy and emotional resonance, creating a rich tapestry of texture and colour. Guided by mentors Zachariah Fenn, Sudheera Dissanayake, and Catherine Thickett, Abdallah’s practice is deeply embodied, drawing expressiveness from a multitude of stimuli including sound, smell, texture, vibration, and taste.
Abdallah’s commitment to accessibility is central to his work. He invites audiences to experience his paintings not only through sight but also through touch, offering a rare and radical invitation to engage with art beyond the visual.
With a growing exhibition history and multiple art prize recognitions—including finalist positions in the Grace Cossington Smith Art Award and the Fisher’s Ghost Art Prize—Luke Abdallah brings bold innovation, lived experience, and a profound reimagining of sensory art-making to his field.
