Gửi Mẹ (to my Mother)

Minh Anh Pham

Gửi mẹ (To my mother) emerges from a larger body of work shaped by my process of reflecting back at my childhood and family’s past–where loss has happened and will continue to happen in the future. The exhibition consists of two main works: Rồi một ngày con sẽ mất (Someday I will lose you) and Con ngựa con gửi con ngựa cha (Dear Father Horse).

Rồi một ngày con sẽ mất (Someday I will lose you) is the project in which I chronicle my mother’s life during the times I visited her in Vietnam, serving as a way to continually preserve and archive as many memories as I can — a shell where I can come back and meet her again. On the other hand, Con ngựa con gửi con ngựa cha (Dear Father Horse) revisits the period following my father’s death, interweaving memory, ritual, and imagination. The work serves as a visual letter to my late father, my effort to reconcile with him, and dialogues shared by my mother and brother regarding their memories of his passing.

At its heart, Gửi mẹ is an expression of my love and gratitude to my mother, who has always loved and cared for me.
