Corkery and McDougal’s ‘Modern Interior’ generates a space that is both exhibition and domestic interior. Reproduced imagery from Victorian architectural catalogs are enlarged to appear “life-size” and hang loosely as wall coverings that deftly fluctuate between spatial illusion and self-aware pictorial representation.
The covered gallery becomes a framing device for McDougal’s screen-printed panel pieces. Reacting to definitions of painting as singular and of print media as facsimile, McDougal’s practice disrupts the notion of the perfect copy produced by faithful machines.
Both artists work largely in the medium of silkscreen. In this first-time collaboration, their work will explore notions of public and private space, the collection and display of art objects and the printed page as a site, using source material such as popular magazines, books, catalogs and historic interior design journals. Both the pictorial and the spatial will also be addressed - prints become objects and rooms become prints.
Biography
Elizabeth Corkery
Elizabeth Corkery (b. 1986, Sydney; Lives and works in Boston, MA) completed her MFA at Cornell University, Ithaca in 2013 and BFA from The College of Fine Arts, Sydney in 2008. Recent exhibitions include ‘Small Decors’, The Telfer Gallery, Glasgow (2014); 'Nowhere is There a Garden', Hartell Gallery, Ithaca (2013); 'Galerie', 303 10th Ave, New York (2012); 'I is for Pulsating Flowers', DUMBO Arts Festival, Brooklyn (2011). She has received production and research funding from The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, The Brooklyn Arts Council, St Botolph Club Foundation and Australian philanthropic organisations The Ian Potter Cultural Trust, The Dame Joan Sutherland Fund and The Australia Council. In 2015 she will be an artist in residence at The Vermont Studio Center, VT in April and the Rumpueng Arts Center, Chiang Mai, Thailand in October/November.
Graham McDougal
Graham McDougal (b. Edinburgh) studied at Cumbria College of Art and Design and at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, Scotland, before earning an MFA at Southern Illinois University.
His work has been included in projects at Jose Bienvenu Gallery and Printed Matter Inc. in New York, I-Space, Chicago, The Print Center, Philadelphia, Gallery St Vitus, London and Bunkier Sztuki Contemporary Art Gallery, Krakow.
He has Received Grants from the Scottish International Education Trust, Cornell Council for the Arts and New York Foundation for the Arts. Recent awards include a research grant from Oberlin College and participation in the Nesnadny + Schwartz Visiting Curator Program, Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland.
McDougal has taught in the Art Department of Oberlin College and the Department of Art (AAP) at Cornell University and is currently on the art faculty at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
