Artist Talks 23.08.14 62-4m
Pretender is about objects that are nebulous and vague. It examines objects that have acquired value and are associated with grandeur and wonder. But it’s also more about the way these things interact with objects that are small, confusing, anti-heroic and useless. It’s about things that don’t fit into any recognizable category of objecthood and the way things become meaningful. Pretender explores the relationships that objects cultivate amongst themselves and the way they produce and create meaning with one another.
Jana Hawkins-Andersen is an artist based in Sydney. She is interested in objects - in things that might become landfill and in things that could definitely be considered storage fodder. Her practice is concerned with the meaningfulness of objects that exist as excess and things that are surplus to need. She completed Honours at Sydney College of the Arts in 2013.
Jana would like to thank the Ceramic Design Studio at Gymea Tafe.
