Labyrinths of Signs
Sue Jo Wright
‘Labyrinths of Signs’ is a textile installation body of work by Sue Jo Wright, which explores the journey of identity, belonging, and the discovery of community.
Inspired by her favourite childhood films like Labyrinth and The Goonies, the work draws parallels between those adventurous quests and the artist’s own life—navigating ups and downs in search of a sense of identity, Deaf culture and connection.
Born deaf, the artist struggled growing up without access to Auslan or the Deaf community, often feeling isolated and unseen. It wasn’t until later in life that she found a sense of belonging among Deaf people who shared her language, values, and lived experience.
The installation invites both d/Deaf and hearing audiences to reflect on language, culture, and what it truly means to find “your people.”
This project has been supported by Deaf Connect Grants and Sponsorship Program.
