dwelling / belonging brings together five emerging artists on unceded Gadigal land, with diverse Asian heritages and journeys to and from Australia. Each has experienced being a contemporary Australian, by choice or by birth, and holds tightly an engagement with their cultural and ethnic ancestry - explored, shared, processed, and learnt through their art practices.
The exhibition presents a multidisciplinary spread of works, including sculpture (ephemeral and permanent), performance, video, and installation.
Diverse in their physical manifesations, the artworks are united by the artists’ foundational introspection of Asian identity in the context of Australia through culturally specific languages of text, material, technique, and values.
As we continue to develop into a globalised world, the cultural identities of contemporary citizens are becoming increasingly intercultural, existing concurrently across borders, in multitudes, and in flux. With this, we are left with the burden or gift, to build and locate our own identities – informed equally by what was shared, and what was lost.
Cultural reclamation, memorialisation, mourning, and celebration emerge through the practices of the artists brought together in this exhibition.
