My studio window, Bundanon
Matt Elliott, My studio window, Bundanon, 2022-23 Acrylic and Oil Stick on Plywood, 93 x 123cm
This painted scene is an intimate view from the Fern Studio at Bundanon looking out towards the Musician’s Cottage (at the centre of the composition) and surrounding bushland. Whilst on his Accessible Arts Bundanon Artist Residency in September 2022, Matt would sit by the windows every morning to have his breakfast and watch the kangaroos in the paddock below whilst thinking about his art. Painting and drawing on this scale requires Matt to harness his entire physicality and range of movement. The sweeping brush strokes for the sky and clouds were painted vertically, then the composition was rotated for Matt to paint the trees and tree trunks with his long reaching strokes with oil sticks.
As an artist living with disability, this art residency was an incredible opportunity for Matt to create his art in direct response to the natural environment and engage with the cultural and historic significance of the Bundanon site.
